Frequently asked questions
What is Vinyasa Yoga?
Vinyasa = flow. Each pose is connected by movement, the connecting of one breath to the next, and the continuation of a calm and present mind. Vinyasa Power Yoga is practiced in a hot room to maximize results.
Why Hot Yoga?
You have to be hot to stretch. Just as glass & iron can only be molded with heat, so our muscles can only be re-shaped & realigned in heat. Heat also makes you sweat. When we sweat, toxins are released from our internal organs, leading to a cleaner, healthier body.
Why add Yoga to my already effective fitness schedule?
Yoga helps correct the tightening and imbalance of muscles due to the repetitive training & uneven use of muscles in sports training. Tight imbalanced muscles lead to injury. Rest due to injury does not fix the problem: The tightness will not correct itself. Taking time to add Yoga to a fitness program and experiencing the strength, flexibility, and realignment that Yoga is designed to accomplish will lead to many more years of safe, injury-free exercise and sports training. Yoga not only tones external muscles, it also tones internally, improving organ function. The mental and spiritual benefits of yoga help to quiet the chatter of the mind, strengthen mental discipline and focus, and alleviate stress both on and off the yoga mat!
It works!!! At the end of the 1994 football season, the Philadelphia Eagles were the second most injurous team in the entire NFL. Power Vinyasa Yoga was brought to the Eagles in 1995 to “Increase focus, maximize performance, manage stress & prevent injury.” Not only did the Eagles make it to the playoff that year, but they also became the second least injurous team in the NFL.
How often should I practice Power Yoga?
Yoga is intended to be a daily practice, and students are encouraged to make a commitment to practice at least 3 times a week. For results that will transform you we suggest 4-6 times a week. It may be very difficult at first to commit to a daily practice, and it often takes 1 or 2 years to establish this. So don't be discouraged if you're "only" practicing twice a week at first. It's consistent, regular attendance that is important. Use your wisdom and intuition to decide on the best schedule for you.
Can I attend classes if I’ve never stretched a day in my life or never done Yoga?
YES!!! Come in. The only way to become flexible is to stretch. There is no perfect time to start. Sure you can say, “well, maybe I’ll buy a few videos and do it at home for a while so I don’t look foolish.” Trust us, you won’t look foolish. There are no mirrors on the wall so people can look at each other or themselves while they practice. Your space, and your mat are the places where you will discover what your body needs. Your needs and challenges will be totally different from the person next to you, and they will be focused on themselves. You cannot hold a class back by not knowing enough. If you don’t feel like you can do the more advanced poses and postures, your instructor will tell you how to modify your poses to achieve the results you need for YOUR body.
