At Athens Power Yoga we teach a style of Yoga called Power Vinyasa Yoga. Power Yoga is one of the fastest growing styles of Yoga in the country, and people who have become die-hard fans have ranged from the Philadelphia Eagles to Jennifer Aniston, and even to the most hard-core of couch potatoes. Everyone can reap the benefits.

Athens Power Yoga can help you to...

  • Reduce Stress
  • Build Strength
  • Increase Flexibility
  • Release Toxins
  • Achieve Balance

These are just a few of the things that Power Vinyasa Yoga can do for you! Yoga helps the body on its constant quest for physical and mental well being. A good Yoga practice is your time to commune with your body and its unique needs without competition or judgment, while in a safe environment with a qualified instructor to guide you through your own personal journey towards physical and mental harmony.

Power Vinyasa Yoga is taught in a warm room. The heat works deeply into your muscles so that your body can stretch more safely. Also, sweating is the body’s most effective way of eliminating toxins.

Vinyasa = Flow. Each pose is connected with movement and breath. This makes for a great workout and can help assist in cardiovascular health and weight loss. Athens Power Yoga is a small space, with smaller classes so that you can take advantage of much more individual attention & assistance in your learning. No one will be forcing you into poses that your body just can’t handle. Yoga is a life-long learning process. Enjoy the process!

Instructors' biographies...

Kendall Kookogey began her yoga journey as a compliment to running, kick boxing and weight lifting. She was fortunate enough to experience her very first Yoga class at Power Yoga Works in Philadelphia, a Baron Baptiste affiliate studio. For two years Kendall practiced Power Vinyasa Yoga under Bill Raup, the only certified Baron Baptiste Power Vinyasa Master Teacher in Pennsylvania.

Wheras Yoga began as a “work out” for her, it was not long before the spiritual side began to work itself into her body, mind and soul. Kendall found herself experiencing life with a calmness coupled with a sharper awareness of herself and the world around her. It was this yogic change that transformed her and helped her in her day-to-day life as a professional opera singer, a career that was becoming increasingly stressful.

Inspired by the way Yoga challenged and transformed her both physically and mentally, Kendall enrolled in the Teacher Training Program, where she trained extensively with Master Teacher Bill Raup. It is Kendall’s desire to make a difference in people’s lives by sharing the Yoga journey and encouraging the belief in the possibility of change and growth that is inherent in everyone. “Yoga is so personal and really challenges you to look at yourself deeply, and yet it amazes me the community of support that grows out of a Yoga class. There you are alone on your mat, experiencing physical and mental breakthroughs, and yet there is still a sense of family because everyone around you either is experiencing or has experienced their own breakthroughs. It is a powerful connection.”

Kendall is certified by Power Yoga Works in Philadelphia and holds the 200 hour nationally recognized Yoga Alliance Teacher Certification.

Elaine began vinyasa yoga in her freshman year of college, as a replacement for her dance practice. Four years later, yoga has become a stabilizing force in her life; in restless moments and in times of transition, she is grateful for the consistency of her practice, even while it is always challenging and always evolving. Elaine believes that yoga - both as a series of poses and as a decision to come to the mat - is an important acknowledgment of our bodies, of our minds, and of the immeasurable pressures we put on both. Plus, she has never found a more challenging workout! She is very excited that Athens has embraced her favorite practice, and she is thrilled to join the wonderful Athens Power Yoga community. Elaine completed her 200-hour certification with Bill Raup at Power Yoga Works in Philadelphia, the same studio that certified Kendall!

Barb discovered yoga later in life. First, in 2004, her sister-in-law invited her to take a Bikram class at her Florida Studio. Then, less than 2 years ago, Barb began practicing a regular morning meditation and asana practice in Athens. Soon after that, she began taking Kundalini classes with Ande Burke, which continues to be one of her favorite branches of yoga because of its focus on devotional chanting. In January, 2008, she began practicing at Athens Power Yoga. Most recently, she completed the Rolf Gates Teacher Training program, which certifies her as a Vinyasa Yoga Teacher. She is particularly interested in the spiritual practice of yoga because of its emphasis on inward peace. She believes that yoga is a tool to bring about peace in the world, one person at a time. Barb holds the nationally recognized 200-hr Yoga Alliance Teacher Certification.

Mary first started practicing yoga 3 years ago. She was making some changes in her life toward a more healthy lifestyle that included many forms of exercise. But something was missing and she just couldn't quite put her finger on it. Then she discovered yoga. After her very first practice, she realized she had found the missing piece - the spiritual aspect of her life. Yoga nourished Mary's body and her soul. For Mary, yoga allowed her to communicate through her body when words could not suffice. After practicing for 2 years, Mary realized that it was time to share the gift of yoga with others. She wanted to offer the joy she experienced in her practice.

Mary became certified to teach yoga in a National Yoga Alliance recognized certification program with Rolf Gates. Mary believes that yoga can transform lives as well as bodies and brings that philosophy to her teaching.
